What did you do before image consultancy?
Before Image Consultancy most of my professional life was in education as a teacher, consultation and Assistant Principal. After 26 great years in education I resigned to seek another career opportunity I would love doing. At the time I had no idea of what that would be. My love of learning then led me to studying Interior Design and becoming a Kitchen Designer.
What made you choose to become an Image Consultant? What drew you to it?
I don’t always do things in the standard way. You could say I didn’t choose to become an Image Consultant, it chose me after I did the training. My decision to study Image Consultancy and invest in the training was personally motivated by my love of learning and interest in all things related to art, garden, clothing, interior design and styling. It positively changed my life both personally and professionally.
What made you decide that it was time to do your training and take up this new career?
After studying Colour and Style with Academy of Professional Image I had such a wealth of knowledge and understanding waiting to be put into practise. I suppose you could say I was my first client.
I had always loved clothing and clothes had become a proactive outside shield that enabled me to look confident and strong whist hiding how extremely insecure and vulnerable I was on the inside. I lacked inner confidence and belief in myself and felt like I was an actor in my own life. This all changed as I took myself on a style learning journey and discovered inner confidence, greater self awareness and acceptance as well as creating a style that truly expressed who I was. I felt transformed and my wardrobe became my own daily shopping boutique rather than an overcrowded mass of clothes.
I discovered my own uniqueness as I transformed myself on the outside and met the person I was on the inside. This is when I decided to take the giant step and start Individually You. I wanted to support women in being able to discover and embrace their uniqueness and step out each day wearing their style with confidence and a smile.
What are you passionate about?
Each day no matter what I am doing – working, playing or socialising is an opportunity for me to make a difference to myself and everyone I interact with. I want others to realise their self worth, feel confident and free themselves from their inner critic.
Who do you most enjoy working with? How do you help them?
Women 40+ who find themselves at a point of change in their lives where they want to take steps to look and feel different about themselves. The impetus could be related to work , lifestyle or physical body changes that have created challenges and frustration with how to dress in a way that has them looking and feeling confident.
I help them discover their own style pathway to create a wardrobe that supports who they are, their NOW body shape and lifestyle needs. My approach for both colour and style is to step into the client’s wardrobe and start with what they have. We play and experiment and discover the potential and possible outfits that are waiting to be worn. We uncover their colour and style guidelines that can take the frustrations out of getting dressed each day.
How does having a good image help people in their lives?
A good image is more than how you look on the outside. It also needs to embrace and reflect the inner self. You can look great on the outside but not feel confident on the inside. When your visual image looks and feels great it is empowering and brings confidence. There is a strong sense of self when you discover the way to align your outer image with the inner you.
How can you help people create a more impactful and relevant image for themselves?
An image that truly reflects who you are starts with understanding who you are as a person and the story you want your clothes to express so that you feel comfortable and confident. It is about self awareness, self knowledge and self worth. The starting point is asking the question ‘Who am I?’ It does not start with the clothes, it starts with the person. When you understand who you are and the story you want your clothes to tell about you for your lifestyle needs you can discover how to create outfits that enhance your personal, social and professional requirements.
Anything else you’d like to tell us?
Having a wardrobe full of clothes will not change your life but how you wear them can. What you wear and how you wear it has the power to make you feel comfortable and confident about being YOU. Every day take the opportunity to gift yourself and others with a compliment.
