Image consultant vs personal stylist: what's the difference?

The terms often overlap, but image consulting typically encompasses a broader range of disciplines. While personal styling commonly focuses on clothing, outfits, wardrobes and shopping, image consulting may also include personal colour analysis, body and proportion analysis, professional image, communication through appearance, personality and the psychology of style.

NO TALENT REQUIRED

Do I need to be naturally stylish?

No, you don’t need to be born with style or have the style gene (if there were one). What you do have to be is willing to learn.

That’s because many of the principles behind colour and style can be understood and learned. Visual perception, colour properties, proportion, scale and the psychology of appearance aren’t mysterious talents available only to people born with ‘good taste’. One of our graduates, Dr Gina Kingston, says her family friends would once have voted her the person least likely to become an image consultant. Discovering the principles behind style made it all begin to make sense and easy for her to apply to her own clients.

What skills do you need to become an image consultant?

Colour knowledge

Understanding colour properties, harmony, contrast and the psychology and communication of colour, along with the practical skills required to conduct a personal colour analysis and advise clients on using colour effectively.

Style and visual principles

Proportion, scale, line, shape, fit, fabric, construction and visual perception. Rather than memorising a set of “rules”, you need to learn to think like an image consultant, understanding the principles, the “why” so that as fashions change you can easily adapt.

Understanding people

Personality, identity, lifestyle, values, preferences and client goals. This is not about using a specific formula; it’s about assessing the individual in front of you – their needs, their values, their lifestyle so you can adapt your knowledge and advice accordingly.

Listening, questioning, explaining and making recommendations without imposing your personal taste.

GETTING STARTED

Do you need qualifications to become an image consultant?

There’s no university degree for this but you do need real training to go beyond your own taste and style.

Our courses are CEU-approved by the Association of Image Consultants International (AICI), the preeminent professional body for image consultants and personal stylists globally. Once you’ve completed your course through the Academy of Professional Image, you can go through AICI’s professional certification route to become a Certified Image Consultant.

Our comprehensive colour and style training runs approximately 101 to 131 hours, depending on your pathway.

In-person: the fastest option — complete the intensive program in around 2.5 weeks.

Distance learning: takes a little longer, at your own pace, fitting around work and family commitments. Each module is AICI CEU-approved for an estimated number of hours — see the full course outline for details.

Before I trained to become an image consultant, I had worked as a Publicist for Penguin Books Australia and also in an IT data centre in the UK in internal communications and transition management. I’m not alone in having a background that had nothing to do with style or fashion.

Imogen Lamport is an award-winning image consultant, colour expert, author, and educator who has worked with clients since 2004 and trained image consultants and personal stylists since 2006.

Known for her analytical approach to colour and style, Imogen has spent more than two decades exploring not simply what works, but why it works. Her teaching brings together colour theory, visual perception, proportion, personality, personal style and practical consulting skills, giving students the depth of knowledge to work confidently with real people rather than relying on rigid rules or formulas.

Imogen is the creator of the 18-palette Absolute Colour System and co-creator of 16 Style Types, which explores the relationship between personality and personal style. She is an AICI Certified Image Professional (CIP), recipient of the prestigious AICI Jane Segerstrom Award, former Vice President of Business Development for AICI International and twice President of AICI Australia.

Through the Academy of Professional Image, Imogen has trained image consultants from around the world, many of whom came to the profession from completely unrelated careers.
