Could you do personal colour analysis for a living?
There is an honest answer to that, and it is more useful than yes or no.
Nine questions, about two minutes. You will find out what kind of personal colour consultant you would be, where you actually stand right now, and the one thing that would get in your way.

Where are you with this, honestly?
Most people who would be good at this never seriously consider it. They spend years telling friends which top to buy, for nothing, without once noticing that there is a qualification behind it and people who make a living this way, in Australia and well beyond it.
If you have got as far as this page, you are somewhere on the path already. The question is where.
You have decided, you are just choosing.
You know you want to train. You are comparing providers and reading the fine print, and what you need is not more inspiration, it is a straight answer about which course and when.
You want this, and you have not given yourself permission.
You think about it regularly. You have looked at the course pages more than once. Something, and you may not have named it yet, keeps making it a next year problem.
You have only just started wondering.
Somebody said something, or you read something, and the thought has not gone away. You are not committing to anything today and nobody sensible would ask you to.
None of those is the wrong answer, and the last one is not a lesser one. But they need completely different next steps, and being told the wrong one is how people stall for another two years.
The quiz tells you which you are, and what to actually do about it.
There are four kinds of personal colour consultant
After over twenty years of training people to do this work, it is nearly always one of four. Each one is good at it. Each one gets stuck somewhere completely different, which is the more useful half of the answer.
The Natural Eye
She can see it before she can explain it. Friends have been sending her photos from changing rooms for years and she has been answering for free.
The Colour Detective
She does not want to be told which colours work. She wants to know why, and she gets suspicious when a system looks too tidy.
The Confidence Builder
For her this was never really about clothes. It is about the moment somebody sees herself properly for the first time in years.
The Quiet Entrepreneur
She has spotted the gap. She has probably also worked out roughly what it would earn.
The quiz tells you which one you are, what you are already doing well without being taught, and the specific thing that would stop you. Then it gives you something to try this week with a friend, a window and a tea towel.
Who is asking
I am Imogen Lamport, and I have been training personal stylists and colour consultants since 2006, from a studio in Melbourne and online to students on every continent.
I am an AICI Certified Image Professional, hold a B.A. in Communications, and am a qualified Psychological Type Practitioner. I have served twice as President of the AICI Australia Chapter, spent four years on the AICI International Board, and in 2019 was given the AICI Jane Segerstrom Award in Chicago for work towards a more positive image in society.
In 2009 I built the Absolute Colour System, eighteen colour directions designed to work across every age, ethnicity and skin tone, because the seasonal systems I had been trained in kept leaving real people stranded between the boxes.
I have written five books and around three thousand articles on colour and style. I would rather show you how something works than tell you to trust me.
Which is more or less what the quiz is.
What you get at the end
- Your consultant type, with what you are already doing well
- The blind spot that comes with it, named plainly
- Where you actually are on the path, which is not a pass or fail
- A real draping exercise to try this week, so you find out what you can already see
- The first two lessons of our style training and a colour webinar, free, if you want to go further
No cost. No call from a salesperson. You can read your result and never hear from us again, and plenty of people do exactly that.
From people who have done the training
The colour systems I had been taught were flawed, contradictory, and lacked clarity.
Jessica Ryan of Curate & Style
who had already been working as an image consultant for eight years when she retrained with us.
As a professional stylist with over 8 years of experience, even after doing multiple colour courses, I couldn’t find a color system that truly resonated with me or my clients. So many colour systems were flawed, contradictory lacked clarity that a client could easily interpret and apply. I wanted to deepen my understanding of color science so that I could confidently guide my clients through the transformative power of colour with precision and confidence. Imogen’s expertise and passion are unparalleled, and her training exceeded all my expectations.
Thanks to her training, I now feel completely confident in analyzing color, educating clients on how to successfully apply their palettes, and delivering empowering and accessible education around colour in their wardrobe. This training has been invaluable to my business, completely enhancing the way I can now further support my clients, also delivering opportunities for increased profitability within my business.
I couldn’t recommend Imogen’s training more highly, and I am proud to have Imogen as a mentor and support in the industry with her wealth of knowledge and inspiration.
Fiona Lovell of My Colour and Style
who did both the online and the in person practical training and now works as a colour and style expert.
Before I enrolled, I was unsure how much colour made a difference to getting dressed. The more I researched it, and the more I researched Imogen’s work, I really understood how much it does make a difference. So booking in with Imogen, I did not even hesitate — I booked in for a discovery call with her, and that call made my decision.
What I can do right now as a colour analyst — I believe I can really pick someone’s undertone, whether their hair suits their undertone, their contrast and their intensity — being able to look at them and go, ‘what would suit them the best.’
I really found learning face-to-face with Imogen so valuable. I got to absorb how much she knows about colour theory and how practical she can make it. She really does understand how to teach everyone in a different manner that we understand.
If you’re on the fence about doing a colour analysis course, I would really encourage you to jump on a call with Imogen and have her go through the course. You’ll get to pick up on her vibe and how much she absolutely is passionate about colour and style. It really is worth the investment — it’s something I’ve never regretted. And if I could sit every day with Imogen and learn from her, I absolutely would.
Gulinka Shadinouwa from Styled By Gulinka
on the training materials and the confidence they gave her to run consultations.
Before I enrolled, I wasn’t sure how colour analysis really worked. I’d seen bits and pieces online and assumed it was a little fluffy.
What I discovered is that there’s a real depth and science to why the colours we wear make such a difference. The training goes into a deep understanding of someone’s undertone and how it works together with their features. It’s that nuance that can completely change the way you approach your wardrobe.
Imogen is an excellent teacher with such deep knowledge. The materials that you receive as part of the training are incredibly useful, a big resource library I still come back to and learn something new from every time.
If you’re thinking about investing in colour analysis, I’d say go for it. It’s been the perfect complement to my personal styling, it lets me give my clients so much more value and I’ve been able to turn it into a whole new part of my business. It’s absolutely worth the investment!
Questions people ask before they start
No, and the students who do best are rarely the ones who arrive knowing the most about clothes. Our students range from their twenties to their sixties, on every continent, with and without prior experience. What predicts success is not taste. It is being willing to keep practising past the point where you are bad at it.
It is self paced with no due dates, so it takes as long as your life allows. Colour Module 1 is twenty three lessons. Some people finish it in a few weeks, others take a year, and both are fine. You keep access for life, including every future update.
The course content is accredited by AICI, the Association of Image Consultants International, as a CEU provider. It has to be resubmitted and reapproved every three years to stay that way, which makes it a third party check rather than a badge we awarded ourselves. That distinction matters in a field with a lot of self issued certificates.
Yes. The online training is identical in content and certification to the in person course in Melbourne, and we have graduates working in Malaysia, the Czech Republic, the United States and elsewhere. Draping is taught both physically and virtually, so you can work with clients anywhere once you qualify.
Two ways. There is no governing standard for seasonal systems, so dozens of versions circulate at once and what one consultant calls Bright Spring has colours that another version doesn’t. And most of them assess only two of the three colour properties at a time. The Absolute Colour System is proprietary, consistent, and reads value, undertone and intensity together, which is what the eighteen directions are for.
Have a look at our consultant directory and see what graduates charge, then search your own area and count how many personal colour consultants come up. In most places the answer is a surprisingly small number. Virtual draping removed geography as a ceiling, and because we teach body shape assessment by eye rather than with software or measuring, there is no studio and no equipment overhead.
Personal colour analysis as a social media hashtag has been viewed on TikTok and Instagram over 1.2 billion times since late 2023 – this shows that people are interested and engaged with personal colour analysis as a valuable concept, and many want to discover their own colours.
Rather than give you a figure, go and look at real ones. Our consultant directory lists graduates running their own businesses in Australia, Canada, UK, Malaysia, the Czech Republic, the United States and elsewhere, most of them with their prices published on their own sites. Email a couple and ask them directly. We have no involvement in that conversation, which is exactly why it is worth having.
What is worth understanding is the shape of the model. A colour consultation runs a couple of hours. Virtual draping means your clients no longer have to live near you, which means location is no longer a stumbling block. You can analyse clients from every corner of the globe, and this is something taught in our personal colour analysis training programs.
And because most people only need a colour analysis every 5-10 years (rather than a 6-week haircut), you need referrals, which is why the depth of your training matters more than your marketing to build a sustainable business, as happy clients tell people. In fact, one client of mine who has referred well over 30 others in the past 3 years. Her transformation made such an impact on her friends, family and colleagues that they all decided that they wanted what she had.
